Kolade’s background is – just like his fashion – international. Born in Sudan in 1987 to German-Nigerian parents, he grew up in Kampala where he attended a British school before moving to Berlin in 2005. Kolade completed his fashion design course at The Academy of Arts Weißensee in 2013. Prior to launching his eponymous label in Berlin together with his business partner Greta Dombrowski, he spent two years in Paris working for Maison Martin Margiela and Balenciaga.
Every BOBBY KOLADE collection begins somewhere special. The Spring/Summer 2016 collection takes us to the Yoruba people in Benin and Nigeria. This season is about performance; dance and masquerade; an energetic display of theater; a hybrid of styles and fabrics passed down generations, reinvented and displayed in a rich festival of colors and costumes intended to terrify, mystify, entertain and entice the spectator. The collection also celebrates creativity and improvisation; moreover the power of improvised creativity.
Although rich with reference and layered with meaning, at BOBBY KOLADE it is, as always, more about the how than about the what. And it is always about a certain kind of Berlin nonchalance that can only be described as cool.
